Notixy

FAQ

The questions that actually come up. If yours isn’t here, the feedback form reaches the person who writes the code.

What is Notixy?

An iPhone app where you control notifications from businesses and people: you subscribe to the senders you choose, pick the categories you want, and set quiet hours and a daily limit. You can unsubscribe from or report a sender in one tap.

Who can send me notifications?

Only senders you subscribed to, and only in the categories you allowed for them. There is no way for a sender to reach you before you subscribe.

Is Notixy free?

Yes. Notixy is free for users.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, and Notixy never asks for your name, email address or phone number. Your install is known by a random ID. You can choose an optional nickname.

What are the categories?

Time-sensitive, appointments, promotions, critical alerts and info. You allow or refuse each category per sender. Promotions are off by default.

What do quiet hours do?

Whatever you haven’t allowed during your quiet hours waits and arrives when the window ends. By default that is promotions and info; time-sensitive messages and appointment reminders still come through, and you can change this for each category. Critical alerts always come through.

How do I stop notifications from a sender?

Open the sender or one of its notifications and unsubscribe; it takes one tap. To silence a sender for a while instead, pause it for 1 hour, 8 hours, 1 day or 1 week: its messages still arrive in your inbox, without a sound or banner, and the pause ends by itself.

How do I report a sender?

Use the report action on the sender or on one of its notifications. Reports go into a moderation queue, and a sender that breaks the rules can be suspended.

Does Notixy work if I turn push notifications off?

Yes. The app fetches your recent notifications when you open it. Push only makes them arrive sooner.

How long are my notifications kept?

On our servers they are deleted automatically by category: time-sensitive messages after 15 minutes, promotions and critical alerts after 7 days, appointment and informational messages after 30 days. Your device keeps its own history, which you can delete.

What does a sender see about me?

That you subscribed and to which categories, the reference the sender attached to your subscription, any response you send to its messages, and whether a message reached your device (never whether you read it). It sees your nickname only if you chose to show it to that sender, or if that sender requires nicknames. Senders never get your phone number, name, email address or device token.

Can I subscribe with a QR code, and does Notixy use the camera?

Yes. Scan a sender’s QR code with the iPhone camera or with “Scan code” in the app, or open its invite link, and the app opens that sender so you can choose what to allow. The camera is used only for this, only while the scanner is open, and Notixy does not take or keep photos. In Settings, “Show my QR” shows a code a sender can scan to ask your permission; you answer in the app.

What is “Route via proxy”?

An experimental switch in Settings, off by default, for networks where Notixy is blocked. When it is on, the app’s requests to Notixy go through the Notixy proxy on their way to our servers.

How do I delete my data?

In the app, open Settings and choose Delete my data: everything we store about you on our servers is removed immediately. You can also ask through the feedback form.

What are time-sensitive messages?

Short-lived messages that are only useful right away. They arrive even during quiet hours and are deleted from our servers after 15 minutes.

I run a business. How do I connect?

Businesses and individuals connect through the Notixy API. Get in touch through the feedback form.

Where can I download Notixy?

Notixy is not on the App Store yet. This site will link to it once the app is published.
